This show is strictly for the dogs (and cats, and birds, and rats … )

HAMPTON — For more than a decade, the World of Pets Expo has been a major annual event in Baltimore, drawing tens of thousands of people and their pets.

This weekend, it makes its debut in Hampton.

“This is the ultimate show for the serious pet lover,” says Jeanne Emge, president of Premiere Events, which promotes the expo. “For about the same price you’d pay to see an hour and a half movie, you can spend the whole day and never be bored.”

The expo will be at the Hampton Roads Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. both days. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children between the ages of 5-12. Pets are welcomed, as long as their vaccinations are up-to-date.

Among the guests appearing at the expo will be Jesse James, the Australian animal trainer known as The Bird Whisperer.

“He puts on a really good show and has a lot to say aobut how to work with difficult birds,” Emge says.

Another guest is Debbie Ducommun, also known as The Rat Lady for her great knowledge of pet rodents.

The event will include entertainment from a wide variety of animal acts – everything from dogs to miniature pigs – as well as instructional seminars and interactive contests.

One of the highlights will be an obstacle course competition for rescue dogs.

“The goal of that event is to really showcase the rescue dogs and show how well they can be trained,” Emge says.

There will also be a “Pupcake Wars” event in which professional bakers and local amateurs will compete to make pet-themed pastries.

Emge says she hopes that this weekend will be the first of many World of Pets Expos in Hampton, following the lead of the show that began in the Baltimore area 13 years ago.

“We’re looking to have this turn into an annual event down in Hampton,” she says. “We’d like to see it catch on and be something that people come to year after year after year.”
