Jared Leto found his inner psycho playing the Joker on ‘Suicide Squad’

We knew Jared Leto went method playing the Joker, but now we’re kind of worried for him.

Pet rats and giving Will Smith the cold shoulder is one thing, but staying in character for so long that he considered doing an interview in character is a step beyond normal. In a new interview with Empire Magazine — which he graced the cover of — Jared Leto reveals the process he went through to play the Joker in Suicide Squad, and how it may have driven him a little bit crazy.

He told Empire Magazine (via ComicBookMovie):

“There was definitely a period of … detachment. I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my (expletive) hole.”

That sounds … painful.

And Leto’s photo on the cover of Empire Magazine looks as insane as he describes it. He glowers at the camera as the Joker, and somehow manages to look ripped straight from Grant Morrison’s Batman R.I.P. comic despite wearing sweatpants and some very silly-looking “hardcore” tattoos.

The rest of the special Suicide Squad issue of Empire Magazine features new movie stills and character details for other members of the squad, including Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and Deadshot (Will Smith).

Empire Magazine has only officially released Leto’s photos, but Suicide Squad director David Ayer and others have posted scans of the new photos on Twitter.
