A Shoals animal shelter is asking the
community for help in spreading some holiday cheer to animals waiting for

Volunteers at the Florence-Lauderdale Animal
Shelter are asking for people to open their homes and foster one of their
shelter pets for a day or longer next week. It’s a project they call ‘Home for
the Howl-a-days

“We were talking one day how the animals don’t
get to spend any time with a family, kind of jokingly,” began Debbie Rapphun.

Soon afterward the lighthearted comment
turned into reality. “The dogs can at least get out and foster for Christmas,
and if the people want to come a few days early, that would be great, and if
they want to keep them a few days after, that’s fine too,” Rapphun continued.

Volunteers are hopeful some community members
will decide to foster the dogs until they can find a forever home, but a
temporary home is better than none at all, they said. Not only will the change
help the animals, but it will help lighten the load at the shelter.

“There’s three of us that work all holidays,
and it would give us some time to spend with our families too; but we’re going
to be down here if there’s animals here, so we’re hoping it will work,” said

If you want to help foster one of the animals
over Christmas, all you have to do is show up at the shelter and the staff will
be glad to help you out.
