WAYNE COUNTY, Oh. – The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office seized an estimated 800 small animals from a pet shop in Smithville Friday.

Officers took mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits and birds from the shop. Authorities say the shop owner surrendered the animals, which are now being cared for by the Wayne County Humane Society.

Adoptions for the animals begin Monday. For now, the humane society is partnering with other organizations to help with care and placement until they are all adopted.

The shelter will hold extended hours to make sure people are able to come out and adopt.
