Map of rat infestation reports

Tracy Lewis and her neighbours in Cardwell Street, Northwood, had a major infestation of rats during the summer.

She believes residents need to report cases as soon as possible.

The 32-year-old said: “In our street the rats were coming up through a broken grid that nobody had done anything about. If you don’t deal with a problem it will get worse. I haven’t seen a rat in over a month now, so hopefully it’s over now.”

Councils are not required to provide pest control services, and in some areas the private sector will account for a greater number of cases.

Both the city and borough councils deal with rats for free, but charge for other pests.

Janine Bridges, cabinet member for housing and neighbourhoods at the city council, said: “Our pest control service is available to all residents and businesses. Unlike a number of other councils, treatments for rats in most homes is free, which makes ours a well-used service.

“What the experts are saying nationally is that the wet and warm weather over the last couple of years is driving rats to higher ground and closer to homes, and they haven’t gone back underground. The behaviour of rats is also changing as a result. They used to be nocturnal but the extreme weather has meant they have had to come out in the day, so they are now more likely to be seen by people.

“We aim to provide a professional service to our customers and respond to requests for treatment as soon as possible.”

A spokesman for the borough council said: “We understand pest control is an important issue for residents and businesses. We provide a range of pest control treatments and have an excellent reputation for effective results. Some of our services are offered free of charge.”

Ants accounted for 245 call-outs in Newcastle, with only six areas in England having a bigger problem with the insects. Stafford was the third worst area in the country for wasps in 2012, with officers dealing with 1,731 cases. Councils also deal with pests other than rats, mice, wasps.

* Residents in estates outside the Corporation of City of London but serviced by the authority and City workers aren’t included in population figure.

N/A: The figures, all of which are supplied by British Pest Control Association, include last year’s survey data for comparison. Where a local authority has a zero or blank figure, this could mean that pest control services are either not provided, are outsourced to a third party, or the authority were unable to provide the required figures due to the reporting mechanisms in place.
