Manila, Philippines–While rats are the common household pests in the country, residents of Alabang Hills executive village in Muntinlupa City fear a different kind of rodent: squirrels.

“Nakikita lang namin ‘yan sa mga wire ng kuryente tumutulay.” Park maintenance worker Boy Sarmiento said.

Squirrels are not common in the Philippines and are mostly seen in places like the US.

Manuel Llige, member of the board of directors of Alabang Hills, believes the squirrels escaped from an owner who lives in the village.

“Probably galing sa pet store. Palagay ko inalagaan yan. Di natin alam kung pinakawalan o nakawala.” said Llige.

Squirrels are cute, but health officials warn residents especially kids to keep their distance from these rodents.

According to Dr. Juancho Bunyi, assistant health officer of Muntinlupa City, squirrels belong to the rodent family and are considered as pests.

Bunyi said that a squirrel bite can cause high fever or tetanus that may lead to severe complications or even death.

“Yung fur nila, yung balahibo, that will also cause some disease. Example dun sa mga may hika.” Bunyu added.

The residents of Alabang Hills are now waiting for advice from the authorities on how to get rid of the squirrels.–report from Ron Gagalac, TV Patrol, ABS-CBN
