Families braved the wet and chilly weather to enjoy a spot of animal racing at Preston Park’s annual Garden Show.

The three day event kicked off on Saturday at the park, on Yarm Road in Stockton, and got off to a good – but wet – start.

The 19th annual show will see racing featuring Shetland ponies as well as sheep and pygmy goats, all going over a purpose-built course featuring miniature hurdles.

On a much smaller scale, ferret racing was also on offer.

Show organiser Kelvin Pye, who took over the running of the event two years ago, said he was delighted with the way it had grown.

He said: “We started with pig-racing last year and I honestly don’t think Preston Park had ever seen anything like it before.

“But I really do believe we’ve gone one better this time.”

The dog friendly show also saw families bring along their pet pooches – who are welcome all weekend

Dog shows, a ‘creature house’ featuring ferrets, pet rats and African pygmy hedgehogs were also part of the entertainment, along with a ceilidh folk band.

The event is open Sunday and Monday from 10am until 5.30pm.
