POLICE are appealing for witnesses to get in touch if they were at a party where pet rats were said to have been blown up in a microwave.

Sergeant Mark Rawlinson confirmed two males had been arrested and quizzed over the incident and bailed until early next month.

Detectives launched an investigation after they were alerted by people who had seen comments about the event on social networking website Facebook.

It is believed the rats were bought from Pets at Home in Barrow earlier this month. Staff at the store were said to be horrified to learn of material posted on Facebook discussing the incident.

A spokesman said: “We have co-operated fully with the police to help identify those responsible.”

Sgt Rawlinson said: “So far two males have been arrested and interviewed, they are due to return to the police station early in March.

“Our enquiries are far from complete and we are still appealing for witnesses particularly anybody who was at the party where the incident is said to have taken place.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Rob Dixon on 0845 330 0247.
