Pet rats on the rise

I have always been an animal lover, but I was surprised to read Sunday’s Parade magazine article about the growing popularity of pet rats. Almost 500,000 homes keep at least one of these “pocket pets”!

When he was small, my son insisted on geckos and then gerbils in his room. None of them lasted long, and the gerbils in particular provided some hilarious moments when they escaped and we had to go hunting for them. Unfortunately, more than one ended up as a special treat for our cat.

My sister once brought home a pet mouse she “won” at school, much to my mother’s chagrin. It escaped, too. I’ve accepted ferrets, although I never want one in my house. But rats? I don’t think so. One enthusiastic rat owner said, “Most people think of rats as cockroaches with fur.”

Count me in that group. I just can’t get past the beady eyes and hairless tail. I’ll stick with my cat.
