Father Greg Bahl of St. Mary’s Catholic Church blesses Trudy, a dog held by Rachel Jacobs Thursday as part of the annual blessing of the pets outside St. Francis School.

“It’s a recognition that God blesses in ways we can see like pets and in ways we can’t see like guardian angels,” Bahl said. “It’s something different.”

Angie Christensen brought her children as well as Sunny, the fluffy family cat.

“[Sunny] is really a part of the family,” Christensen said.

She said her son Nile, 9, was excited to see the cat come to the event.

“He gets to show him off to his friends,” Christensen said.

Mark Henson brought Trixie, the dog of his 10-year-old daughter Amber.

“It’s important for the dog and her owner to be blessed,” Henson said.

Rachel Jacobs, 10, held their dog Trudy to get blessed. Her mother, Linda, said the event also is a nod to St. Francis.

“It’s a nice way to honor and remember St. Francis since he loved animals,” Linda said.

Approximately seven dogs, five cats and a few rats were blessed at the event.

“That’s great,” Bahl said when he learned there were rats at the event.
