A Madison Police officer and a citizen taking part in a ride-along helped rescue abandoned pet rats during the hectic downtown moving period.

Police received a call last Wednesday nights that the pets were seen loose behind a home near the intersection of W. Gilman and N. Henry Streets.

The responding officer and citizen spotted a cage among discarded items. A brown pet rat was sitting nearby. A black and white rat was also there.

The officer and citizen rounded up the abandoned pets. The rats are now in the care of the Dane Co. Humane Society.

The officer described the cage as “in deplorable condition, containing moldy, rotting food.”

The citizen was participating in the Madison Police Department’s ride-along program
