Bob Geldof has urged David Bowie fans to abandon all hope of seeing the icon play live again because he has no plans to return to the stage.

Bowie has been enjoying a musical renaissance following the release of latest album The Next Day back in January, with the long-player – his first output in a decade – receiving widespread praise from critics and topping album charts all over the world.

But despite a return to form, old pal Geldof – who claims to know Bowie ‘fairly well’ – says he won’t hitting the road to promote the new release any time soon.

Forget it: Bob Geldof doesn’t think David Bowie will return to the stage (WENN)

“I don’t think it is a comeback for him,” he said during an interview with Absolute Radio. “I think he is surprised and pleased with attention…(but) I don’t think he’s going to play again, I really don’t think that.

“I know him fairly well…but I have heard from people who do know him that he was pleased about it (the album’s success), very surprised and as anybody would be, flattered. But that’s about it, I think it was a one off and I don’t think he wants to perform any more, I think it is as simple as that.”

Mercurial: David Bowie has recieved widespread priase for new album The Next Day (WENN)

While Geldof – who found fame with Irish rockers The Boomtown Rats  – firmly believes Bowie would rather put his feet up than put on a show, he still hopes he’ll change his mind.

“He is a mercurial character and that is the basis of his genius,” he said. “So maybe he will flip tomorrow morning and say ‘I’m going back out and I am going to be this person this time!”

Bob’s full interview will be aired on Absolute Radio this Friday (June 14).
