ARTISTIC Upper Ferntree Gully student Sasha Mutch has topped the state with two of her VCE pieces selected to be part of the Top Designs exhibition.

The former Ringwood Secondary College student said she never dreamed both her designs would get top honours.

Mutch spent five months creating her animation, Super Sailor Mecha Hero.

A self-confessed fan of the Japanese cartoon-style, Mutch said she was inspired to create a cartoon based on the 90s character Sailor Moon.

“I pretty much had no social life for five months,” she said.

“But it was worth it for what I created.”

For her second piece, Mutch used, pen, spray and ink to explore issues of identity and social judgement.

Titled Privilege, desire, misjudgement, cunning, Mutch said she was inspired to explore these issues after gauging reactions she received when she told people about her four pet rats.

“Whenever I would draw a picture of my rat, people assumed it would be a mouse but when I explained it was a rat, they would often stop asking questions,” she said.

“I think rats are often misjudged.”

As a daughter of two scientists, Mutch has bucked the family trend studying Animation and Interactive Media at RMIT this year.

Mutch said she would love to work in leading animation industries in France, Japan and the USA but also believes there is scope to improve the Australia animation market.

Her work will be on display at the Ian Potter Centre until July.
