SUMMERVILLE — Firefighters saved a rat terrier dog and three pet rats from a burning house off U.S. Highway 78 early Wednesday.

Summerville firefighters responded to 405 Eastover Circle shortly before 4:30 a.m. The rear of the house already was consumed by smoke and fire, Battalion Chief Anthony Mire said.

Three adults and two children escaped the home without injury. Firefighters saved the pets and put the fire out within about 30 minutes, Mire said.

It appears the fire started in an enclosed porch area in a rear corner of the house. The exact cause has not been determined but it’s considered accidental, Mire said.
