ARMY OF SQUATTERS AND THEIR DOGS EVICTED

8 October 2014

By Amelia Burr

A group of around 50 squatters were given their marching orders this afternoon in the middle of a downpour.

The community of young and old (and their many dogs….and pet rats) had been living in the old Met forensic lab on Amelia Street in Walworth behind the Tankard pub for some time.

Building owners, Family Mosaic, issued an eviction notice but the squatters said they thought they had until Friday when, this afternoon, in the middle of a rain shower, they were told they had just fifteen minutes to grab their essentials and get out.

The group piled out on to the pavement on Amelia Street surrounded by as many belongings as they could carry. Cllr Neil Coyle for Newington Ward, who witnessed the mass exodus said: ” I was amazed how many people had been living in the building,” but said complaints about squatting had been on the rise in the borough. “Sadly, homelessness and housing problems are being ignored by the coalition government leaving councils and police to pick up the pieces,” he added.

A 30-year-old woman, who did not wish to be named, left the building in tears with her dog in tow and said she had been made homeless after living in the same flat for eleven years. “I haven’t got a place to go, I just can’t afford it at the moment,” she said. “We’re not causing any trouble. Would they prefer us to be on the street?”

One of the squatters admitted that sometimes they had played loud music, which may have upset some residents in the local area. One woman said the word ‘scum’ had been painted on the side of the building and one day the lock had been filled with superglue.

The News is awaiting information from Family Mosaic about what plans there are for the former police forensics lab in the future.
