Annie given a big send-off at show

Annie Carder’s lap of honour at Romsey Show

Romsey Show secretary Annie Carder was granted a lap of honour as she said farewell to the event after 12 years.

She was given a standing ovation as she rode around he main ring aboard a cart pulled by Randy Hiscock’s heavy horses.

A further surprise awaited Annie as she was also presented with the show society’s prestigious award of merit in the main ring by this year’s president Anthony Attlee.

Annie’s last show did not disappoint as thousands flocked to the Broadlands Estate for a celebration of the countryside.

There was something for everyone to enjoy but the biggest crowd-puller in the main ring was the Devil’s Horseman Wild West Show.

Spectators were treated to a thrilling display of horsemanship skills as the Buckinghamshire-based stunt team re-enacted scenes from America’s Wild West modelled on Buffalo Bill with attacks on a stagecoach being repelled.

Show-goers were also treated to a comical duck herding display by a team of border collies under the watchful eye of Meirion Owen with his ‘Quack Pack’.

There was plenty of livestock on the showground including cattle, sheep, horses and alpacas entered in numerous classes.

Herd manager at Fair Oak-based Mortimers Farm, Charlie Maclean clinched the Supreme Beef Championship award with a Charolais called Mortimers’ Forget Me Knot.

Meanwhile, a five-year-old cow called Lymatran Talent Ann scooped the Supreme Dairy Championship.

The Fur and Feather marquee was also popular, with dozens of small animals on display including rabbits, guinea pigs, chicken, ducks, geese and pet rats.

Falconry and gundog displays kept the crowds entertained in the countryside arena along with ferrets, water buffalos and pigs.

And there was a large collection of working farm machinery from a bygone era on display belonging to members of the New Forest Vintage Tractor and Engine Club. Other attractions included traction engines, floral displays, wine and bees.

Romsey’s mayor and mayoress, Ian and Cheryll Richards were at the show.

Mr Richards said: “There was a very good turnout, despite the showery weather. It was a lovely social gathering and it was nice to see Romsey businesses and exhibitors here today.

“It was a lovely show.”
