KISSING rodents can result in people contracting a potentially fatal illness, a report in the Medical Journal of Australia published today warns.

According to the report by Dr Lito Papanicolas, a registrar at SA Pathology, a 26-year-old Adelaide woman was recently found to have a case of streptobacillus moniliformis – rat bite fever – due to kissing and cuddling her pet rats.

Mr Papanicolas warns that the disease, causing fever and joint pain with a 10 per cent mortality rate if left untreated, could become more common with increased rat ownership.

The Adelaide woman spent 17 days in hospital. She did, however, make a full recovery.
